1. No shoes indoors!
You’re going to wear slippers instead which the household will provide for you during your visit at their house. Don’t forget that you need to leave the slippers there before you go, it’s not yours – the household just let’s you borrow it.
2. You’ll find yourself searching for the light switch inside the bathroom.
Don’t bother. Stop what you’re doing, step outside the room for a second and look for the switch there. It’s a good idea to remember this so you don’t end up frustrated.
3. It’s normal to whistle a song while you’re doing house chores or while you’re working on the computer.
Don’t do it in Russia – it is tied to a superstition that whistling indoors will bring a fire.
4. Thinking of renting an apartment?
You should have a magnet attached to your key chain. That opens the door yo your apartment building. At least in the big cities, most Russians live in apartment buildings so if you need any assistance then ask for help from the locals.
5. Going on a small vacation
Don’t even think you can just kiss your family and take off. Russian customs say that you and your loved ones need to gather inside a living room for a moment. Then your loved ones are able to say goodbyes – it must be done inside the flat. This tradition is ancient and is still followed today.

Sounds like an unusual piece of advice but your time in Russia will be better like this. We can’t really say that Russians’ lives circle around these superstitions but they do feel rather strongly about them and besides, what’s a vacation or a stay in Russia if you don’t embrace the culture and tradition regardless of how strange it is? It is easier – when visiting Russia or any other foreign country – do what the locals do.
